The stock market is an amazing bunch of horse hockey. How can the stock of a company such as General Electric sell for under $20 a share while the stock of a company such as Netflix sell for $189 a share? And while on the subject of the stock market, how can President Obama, in his State of Union message, tout the rise of the stock market as evidence of economic recovery while at the same time saying that Social Security should not be tied to that very same marked? As I have said many times, "There is something going on here that we know nothing about".

What is with "sort of"? It is not only slangy it is vague, and it is used a lot by people appearing on TV. I notice its usage most when I watch CNN, MSNBC, FOX News and ESPN. I think commentators use the phrase when they are afraid to comment to a concrete description of something. It is not only political in usage, I recently saw Dr. Gupta on CNN explaining the pump in Dick Chaney's heart and he must have said "sort of" fifteen times in five minutes.

I begin my 66th year having just completed a year filled with joy, trepidation, and some health concerns. The joy was highlighted by Ali's graduation from James Madison University in May. The whole family was proud of her accomplishment and happy in the notion that she chose well in selecting a college and that she had a successful college experience. We were also proud that Erin successfully complete her freshman year at Susquehanna and that her 2nd year has started off with many positives. The trepidation surrounded Matt's health problems. He was diagnosed with Graves disease(hyper-thyroid)and went through a year of treatment that left him debilitated. He seems to have turned the corner and is feeling better so my hope is that 2011 will be a good year for him, he deserves one. My own health concerns, while troublesome for a time have so far not resulted in any noticeable deterioration in my overall health. I was diagnosed with monoclonal gomopathy a blood condition that can lead to multiple myeloma, which is bone marrow cancer. So far the levels of the abnormal protein in my blood are low but I will be monitored every three months for the next year to see if there is any change.

Returned from Vegas on Friday night/Saturday morning worn out by the shear enormity of the place. It is truly one of the seven man made wonders of the world. We did some gambling and saw some shows and generally had a great time. Jon and Michelle are good people to hang out with and know a lot more about Vegas than either Sam of I. Now back to reality.

The current economic downturn, recession if you like, is being compounded by the policies of the party currently in control of the government, Democrats. By that I mean that the Democrats who are indebted to the labor unions for helping to put them in power are using government money and programs to enhance labor's hold on the American economy, which has shifted dramatically in recent decades. Only about 7% of the private sector economy is unionized. This is because unions have destroyed virtually every industry where workers have been organized, just look at a partial list: automobiles, airlines, department and grocery stores, manufacturing, etc., the list goes on and on. So what have the unions done? They have gone into public sector where today 30% of that workforce is unionized, lead of course, by teacher's unions. The result is the same, state and local governments are bankrupt or are becoming bankrupt. In spite of this fact, the Democrats have continued to follow policies that perpetuate our economic problems: raising the minimum wage, bailing out the auto industry to prevent the collapse of the UAW, and creating a health care system that will alleviate the union's burden of having to provide health insurance to their members. The next step is pretty obvious, a bailout of state and local governments.

DOROTHY RABINOWITZ: The Alien in the White House: The distance between the president and the people is beginning to be revealed. “A great part of America now understands that this president’s sense of identification lies elsewhere, and is in profound ways unlike theirs. He is hard put to sound convincingly like the leader of the nation, because he is, at heart and by instinct, the voice mainly of his ideological class. He is the alien in the White House, a matter having nothing to do with delusions about his birthplace cherished by the demented fringe.”
Can the Democratic Party be saved? In the short term I don’t think so. Republicans will win control or near control of the Congress in the November elections thwarting Obama’s agenda for the following two years. However, the Presidential election of 2012 is still a toss up because Republicans will be so divided over a nominee to challenge Obama. The “Tea Party” and ideological conservatives will want a pure candidate that espouses their beliefs, while pragmatic moderate Republicans will want some one who can win. A third party candidate is a possibility. As for the Democrats I think Obama will be challenged for the nomination, possibly by Hillary Clinton. Obama will have to move toward the center to be re-elected if he survives the challenge.
